Mutuh
vinyl 5"

Review: New Jersey, prominently known for its horrid smell, Jay and Silent Bob and the New Jersey Devil, Often times the state is overlooked due to its vicinity with New York City. Music and New Jersey really don't usually come in the same sentence, I mean the most famous Music Artist to come out of New Jersey was Bon Jovi. However as we look past the stench, and feathery mullet of John Bon Jovi, we find other lesser known artists who deserve a shot.
One such artist who hails from the Human waste fill we call New Jersey is making a name for himself quietly along with other artists from the Tri-state area. His name is Madd Maxxx.
Madd Maxxx is a hardcore rap artist signed to 7th Seal Entertainment, one of underground musics current busiest labels. The label is known primarily for its continual promotion of Free Download able E.P's which seem to never end. Alongside other talented artists such as Lo key and Stitch mouth, Madd Maxxx is in great company.
As i mentioned previously 7th Seal Entertainment is primarily know for its free download able album promotions, it should come as no surprise that the album we are reviewing today follows in the same suit. Today we are going to be reviewing Maxxx's follow up to 2004's "In the Absence of Sanity" entitled "Sick Hop."
The title although very plain, contains another level which describes exactly the style of music Maxxx creates. I received this album on 1/29/06 and was extremely excited to take a listen because his previous release "In the Absence of Sanity" was probably my favorite underground release of 2004.
Maxxx style is extremely original as compared to the rest of the horrorcore/hardcore rap genre as it exists today. Many artist in the same genre make the same common errors that Maxxx sound condemns. Often times underground artists will use voice effects to make their selves sound harder then they actually are, the thing that makes Maxxx stand apart from the rest of the genre is he uses his own original and natural voice to spit the creative themes and genius lyrics he continually lays out on each track.
As Maxxx is an artist signed to 7th Seal Entertainment a lot of the production and graphic art comes from the resident creative mastermind at the label, Lo key. Lo key and Madd Maxxx combined there creativity to produce a graphic concept featured in an enclosed eight page booklet. The front cover of the album portrays a neon green clad religious theme featuring a praying statuette surrounded by grime. Its very basic, however very original which is nice. The fonts aren't the best choice and look out of place. However i digress, overall a very solid front cover.
As previously mentioned the album comes with an eight page booklet which features a portrait of the coinciding title track for that page. Awesome attention to detail and great concept. Definatly something the listener should check out as it adds an additional element to check out while listening to the music.
Speaking of the music, let us now get into the reason we are here, the music. The album features 8 tracks, as well as an introduction and outro. The original production for the album is done by Lo key, however many of the tracks are used over top of jacked beats which is something that happens quite frequently now a days and is on the verge of getting overdone. My opinion is that by using jacked beats, it is just adding another element of ease in recording an album which negates all the hard work put in by artists who create their own beats. Basically, leave it for the mixtapes!
The first track is the title track, Sick Hop. This is one of the tracks i mentioned before which features a jacked beat. This song is quite simple, not very catchy, and after listening to it 3 or 4 times actually quite annoying. However Maxxx flow and lyrics are top notch for this track. The song really reads like a "Fuck You" note, Maxxx sends out warning shots and lays out the truth to other underground artists. Something that you have to admire about Maxxx is he doesn't shy away from telling the truth, brutally honest to the point where you hold your head and just grimace and laugh at the same time. This quality comes out strong in the track Sick Hop.
Moving right along the next song is entitled "Shit Talkin" this track features original production and mastering by Lo Key. The production on this track is a more of a rock sound featuring the distorted electric guitars and sirens sounding in the backdrop. Again though the song is not very catchy I have defiantly heard better from Maxxx in the past.
Next on the track list we have a song entitled "2 sick" featuring Lo Key, the beat for this sound is again, jacked. The two emcees alternate verses and choruses which sounds like the two are passing the microphone back and forth, very solid track all around and has proven so far to be my favorite on the record. Not much negative I can take from this track.
However at this point I found myself asking for more, waiting for the Madd Maxxx that I heard on "In the Absence of Sanity." It didn't take long to get to that request, because On track five "Vengeful Possession" it was answered. The song has a very "Class time Horror" (For those familiar with "In the Absence of Sanity") sound to it. Definitely a refreshing sound as I really hadn't been impressed with the album before this point, however one thing I noticed is as the album has gone on each song has improved on the last.
Next up i heard a familiar sound which ended up being an Atmosphere beat. The track was titled "Alive After Suicide" featuring Lo Key. Amazing track and incredible chorus. Hands down the best Madd Maxxx track I've ever heard so far. No it is not an over reaction. When this album Drops make sure you download this song! This track raised the bar for the album again, which i could now see was a continuing trend so after putting this song on repeat a few times i was ready for the next track and I was hoping the trend would continue.
"Trapped in Paradise" was the name of the next track, which again was a jacked beat. This song was very well put together, the song had a slower more reflective sound which offered a change of pace to a mostly up beat and high tempo album. This shows what I had been experiencing all along and really defined it, Madd Maxxx showcases diversity in basically every track, not one sounds the same. As i have mentioned time and time again before, Diversity makes a solid artist.
The Final track was entitled "The End is Upon Us" and this track again changed my mind as to what was my favorite song on the album, The beat just fits so perfectly with Maxxx's sound and his lyrics on this song are incredible. Maxxx actually sounds somewhat like Minnesota Underground Rap King, Atmosphere. His voice actually reaches the ceiling or so it sounds. You can feel the emotion oozing out of this song. A very epic sound and a great way to end the album.
Bottom Line: Well the bottom line is this, At first The tracks One through Five, i wasn't sold on the album and was hoping it would get better so I didn't have to give a great artist a bad review. Well it did. After the fifth track the album really begins. A little bit of a slow start, finished off with what the people wanted. It seems to me that maybe Maxxx was trying to go with a more mainstream type sound with the first few tracks but finished off with the sound many fans are flocking to, and that is the sound of the underground. Overall This album is going to be a free download, theres a mix of tracks you need to hear, and tracks that don't reach the bar, I'd definatly download the album and a few of the tracks would be on repeat! Great effort from Madd Maxxx and 7th Seal Entertainment!
