Группа основана в 1999 году в Lappeenranta/Tampere (Финляндия). Основатель группы - Shatraug (из известной финской блэк-метал группы Horna).

Слово «Sargeist» образовано от двух немецких слов «sarg» (гроб) и «geist» (дух). Название перекликается с песней Rotting Christ «The Old Coffin Spirit».

Sargeist - финская блэк-метал группа, образованная в 1999 году. Первоначально она создается как сольный проект Shatraug'a, который больше всего известен по участию в группе Horna. Название группы сочетает в себе два немецких слова, "Sarg" ("гроб") и "Geist" ("дух", "призрак"), оно происходит от названия песни блэк-метал группы Rotting Christ "The Old Coffin Spirit" ("Старый гроб Духа").

И музыкально и лирически, Sargeist остается близкой к корням скандинавской "старой школы" черного металла. Таким образом, лирические темы часто имеют дело с сатанизмом и антихристианскими богохульствами, а также c тьмой, депрессией, мизантропией и ненавистью.

В 2000 году к Sargeist присоединяется ударник Lord Volos, но он не задерживается надолго. В 2001 году в составе появляются гитарист Gorsedd Marter и ударник Makha Karn, которые тоже вскоре покинут коллектив. С ними записано демо "Tyranny Returns".

После записи трёх демо, в 2002 году место вокалиста занимает Hoath Torog, а ударника - Horns. Оба музыканта известны по участию в другой финской блэк-метал-группе, Behexen. С ними записывается первый полноформатный альбом, "Satanic Black Devotion", они остаются в группе и по сей день. А в 2009 у группы появляется новый бас-гитарист, Vainaja.

На данный момент группа выпустила три полноформатных альбома, "Satanic Black Devotion" (2003), "Disciple of the Heinous Path" (2005) и "Let the Devil In" (2010), а также несколько демо, миньонов и сплитов с такими исполнителями, как Merrimack, Temple of Baal, Horned Almighty, Funeral Elegy, Bahimiron и Drowning the Light. В 2013 году выпускается компиляция с неальбомными треками "The Rebirth of a Cursed Existence".

Блэк метал акт из Финляндии ведомый Шатраугом, вокалистом также и другой, более известной группы. Очередной грязный, сатанинский образ, рожденный фантазией прокаженного аутсайдера. В каждой песне чувствуется дух, прекрасный аромат, обилие образов и чувств. Будть то черви, выползающие из брюха, раздутой и полуразложившейся бездомной собаки, либо таинства закрытых культов, скрытых глубоко от людских глаз или выворачивающий наизнанку затхлый, тяжелый воздух деревень, отдавших душу Ее Величеству, потустороннее бесплотное присутствие которой осквернило ранее буйную жизнь, королеве Черной Смерти. Первые два полноформата и сплит с DTL - шикарный материал. Тут нет особой новизны и оригинальности, зато есть цепляющий мелодизм, злоба и соблазн, присущие финской бм сцене.

Сегодня ослушал Let the Devil In внятно - и очень понравилось. Звук нарулили классный, как в крайнем Baptism.
А компиляха классная, да.

By now, SARGEIST require no introduction. For nearly 20 years now, the band - led by erstwhile HORNA guitarist/songwriter Shatraug, who's arguably the most prolific metal musician of that same period - have been at the forefront of the ever-fertile Finnish black metal scene. In fact, alongside HORNA, one could say that SARGEIST are the most influential band of that scene, which has gone on to influence countless other worldwide scenes in this millennium.

And while each SARGEIST full-length has been a stunning snapshot of the band's headspace during that point in time, so, too, does the long-awaited Unbound provide a poignant portrait - one of a nearly reinvented lineup, but one just as vital. Gone is the "classic" SARGEIST lineup that included longstanding co-conspirators Torog and Horns (vocals and drums, respectively). Now, a rhythm section - bassist Abysmal and drummer Gruft - who together possess a wealth of experience in the Finnish metal underground; erstwhile Nightbringer and ADAESTUO guitarist VJS, whose activities also span other bands and continents; and vocalist Profundus, who's been an incredibly prolific drummer the last couple decades, and who's lately most renown as the vocalist for Desolate Shrine.

Despite this seemingly significant change, the SARGEIST aesthetic remains resolute and unyielding - indeed, they are more Unbound than ever. Grimy yet spectral, icily melodic but burning with a desperation beyond compare, songwriting that cuts to the heart of the purest black metal but reverentially receives it blood: the SARGEIST of Unbound are a band renewed and revitalized, prepared to keep the throne they've occupied these many years through a subtle yet studied refinement. Not for nothing has this lineup been active on the live front, and upon the release of Unbound are heading out on a European tour with esteemed labelmates ACRIMONIOUS and CHAOS INVOCATION.
